Yesterday's Record: 2-1 (the 1 loss was a 1 point loss from Kentucky that won by 10 not 11)

George Mason @ Georgia St: -1
Mason is again one of the class teams of the Colonial while Georgia State has not done anything since the Lefty Driesel era in the early 2000's. The Patriots are looking forward to March and should win this game outright, thus take the road team.

William & Mary +12 @ Old Dominion
William & Mary need one more marquee win to further stamp themselves as a possible at large team in the field. ODU however is solid, as they have already beaten G'Town on the road. Considering this is the Tribes last shot, not including bracketbusters, I believe they make this a close one, not a 12 point margin.

Baylor -11 vs. Iowa State
The Bears are on fire, coming off a huge OT road win vs. Texas, while the Cyclones are struggling and a team with no quality wins, no huge road wins, and are already playing out the string. Bears win easy.

NBA Injury Update

-Tony Parker is out Wednesday but is hoping to return to action Thursday
-Tyreke Evans probable for tonight's game vs the Spurs.
-Stephen Jackson expected to be good to go tonight, same for Chauncey Billups
-Carmelo Anthony remains a game time decision for the Nuggets tonight
-Steve Nash is still being bothered by a lower abdominal strain and back pain that may be related to the abdomen injury.
-Gerald Wallace and Al Harrington doubtful to play tonight
-Caron Butler will not play on Wednesday due to swelling in his left knee due to a collision with Paul Pierce on Monday.
-In a radio segment Brandon Roy stated that he could play Thursday against San Antonio but a more realistic return points to Saturday when the Blazers take on the Lakers.
-Carlos Boozer still has tightness in his calf but is on track to practice on Thursday or Friday.

1. Rhode Island -4 @ LaSalle
Rhodie is the class of the A-10, no matter what Temple has to say about it. The Rams will go into Philly and win by double figures. They have more talent, better shooters and are motivated to keep winning to secure an NCAA berth.

2. Kentucky -11 vs. Ole Miss
The Cats are pissed following their 1st loss of the season last week to South Carolina. They blitzed Vandy out of the gym and coming off a loss, Ole Miss walks into the wrong spot. With plenty of discussion of a Wall-Calipari feud, expect the probable #1 pick to go off. Kentucky big.

3. Kansas State -3 @ Nebraska
KState may experience a hangover after their close OT loss to rival Kansas, however the Cornhuskers are just a bad team. Frank Martin should have his team ready to play and continue to fight for a Big 12 crown. Too much talent for the Cats to lose this one.

Workin the Wire

Here are the top 5 names to add this week...not named Millsap or Collison.

Ty Lawson, Nuggets-Word out of Denver is Billups is playing with a sprained ankle. Could the return of Melo mean a small pre-All Star break for Mr Big Shot? If so, it would be wise to snag Lawson, who has played at Rookie of the Year level when given the opportunity.

Tony Allen, Celtics-As the Celts hold their breath with the pending Pierce MRI news, Pierce owners should run to add Allen to their squads. Allen can score, defend and shoot at solid percentages. A must stash if Paul's injury is deemed serious.

Beno Udrih, Kings-While he disappointed in his start Monday agst Denver, Udrih may be in for some run with Tyreke Evans battling some injuries. Beno shoots well from the outside and can rack up some assists, but dont expect much.

Jason Williams, Magic-White chocalate may not be starting every night, but given the state of the Magic backcourt, especially the ever-changing health of Jameer Nelson, Williams may be in line for some major minutes if Nelson continues to be bothered by a bad knee. J-Will can hit the 3 and add some assists. Keep an eye on Nelsons health before adding him however.

Rudy Fernandez, Blazers-If you need 3s, this is your guy. Yes Roy is out, however Fernandez does his damage in bunches. In limited playing time he nails 3s, grabs steals and scores around 12 pts a game. If you need someone for the end of your bench and can stash him, do so.

Chris Douglas-Roberts-27 pts, 12 rebs, steal. Once the Nets get healthy, expect his all around game to pick up as well.

Pickup of the Night
Donte Greene-The Kings 2nd year man scored 24 points in a start for the Kings. he also hit 2 threes, grabbed 5 rebounds and got a steal. Keep a close eye on the talented wing player.

Drop of the Night
Quentin Richardson-For those still holding onto him because of his starting role in Miami, it is time to cut bait. Q had only 2 pts and 1 rebound in 17 minutes. He is a must drop at this point.

Workin the Wire

This week names like Forsett, Snelling, and McCoy are obvious choices to fill your roster out. Yet most owners wont have a chance to claim them, so here are a few more less obvious choices who may pay big dividends this weekend and beyond.

Brandon Gibson-Gibson is now the 2nd starting wideout for the Rams who is coming off a solid debut which saw him make 7 catches for 93 yards. The talented Gibson was a prolific wideout at Wash State and with the Rams constantly falling behind, he will see plenty of balls thrown his way and is an excellent keeper option going forward as well.

Leonard Weaver-While McCoy will surely be the Eagles new feature back, he has struggled in short yardage and when the Eagles need a tough yard down by the goal line, Weaver will be their man. He has shown the ability to convert and is also a solid receiver out of the backfield. If you do not land a Forsett, Weaver is a solid alternative.

Lance Long-Long only saw 6 targets for the Chiefs in their loss to the Raiders, however with Bowe's suspension, he becomes the 2nd WR for Matt Cassel. Chris Chambers, despite his 2 TD debut is not the receiver he once was, so expect plenty of touches for Long, who Cassel once compared to a pour mans Wes Welker.

Julian Edelman-While the Welker clone is still suffering from an injured arm and is battling for his own looks, he is likely back as the Pats 3rd WR. He scored in their terrible loss to the Colts and can be a solid PPR contributor going forward.

Jason Avant-If the Eagles completely abandon the run with Westbrook, like they did against the Chargers, every Eagles wideout will hold value. Even Avant, who led the team with 8 catches and 150+ yards last week. If McNabb is going to air it out 55 times like he did, Avant is a sneaky enough talent to garner his fair share of balls.

Chad Henne-One benificiary of the Ronnie Brown injury may be Henne, who may be asked to stay under center for more plays while the Phins play less wildcat. Last week he did attempt 31 passes and that was while playing with the lead for the majority of the game. Expect pedestrian numbers for Henne, however without Brown, if they fall behind, expect him to air it out.

At this point in the season you are simply looking for players to replace injured stars, fill in for bye weeks, or players on the cusp of busting out. We have all of those recommendations all in one place.

Ryan Moats
Obviously everyone is going to try and grab him this week after a 3 TD week against Buffalo. But remember 2 things. He has not been named the clear starter over Steve Slaton and Buffalo is the worst defense against the run. Moats may be a solid waiver wire add, but for those expecting 100 yds and a score every week, you will be disappointed.

Kevin Walter
For where he was drafted in many leagues, Walter has been a huge bust. Now that Owen Daniels is out for the year, expect Walter to get more targets and start to earn his draft position.

Dustin Keller
The Jets TE was dropped in many leagues, however his 8 catch and a TD game this week, he can be a solid option for teams looking to replace a Chris Cooley or Owen Daniels. He was stopped just short of hte goal line on another catch, so watch him explode in the 2nd half as Sanchez becomes more comfortable throwing his way.

Malcolm Floyd
Floyd has always been a solid option for the Chargers down in the red zone and now with their release of Chris Chambers, Floyd can be a threat between the 20's as well. A solid WR3 or flex play going forward in that explosive offense.

Alex Smith
Smith played very well against the Colts and now seems locked in as the 49ers QB for the rest of the year. With Crabtree and Davis he has 2 solid targets, not to mention a ground game that causes defenses to respect the run. He can be a solid QB fill in for an injury or bye week, especially a solid add in keeper leagues.

Nope, this is not Carlos Boozer giving four to Juan Dixon. The Blue Devils have shown the ability to score in 2009 while the Terps simply cannot stop anyone. Given the home field advantage, Thaddeus Lewis throws for 300 yards and at least 3 scores.

-Miami -4 vs. Clemson
This line is low after Miami struggled at UCF last weekend. Jacory Harris is the real deal and after two weeks of playing mediocre teams, Harris is going to show off in a huge contest for the Canes.

-Cal -35 vs. Washington State
I never like taking games with the spread this high. This week however I believe the Bears will score 60. Both Best and Vereen will rush for over 100 yards, while Riley will throw 3 scores. Blowout for the Bears.

Hot off the Wire-Waiver Wire Gems Week 6

Chad Henne-Henne torched the Jets for well over 200 yards and two scores. The schedule will remain difficult for the Phins and their running attack wont be as successful most weeks, so expect Henne to continue to develop. Keeper league owners should take notice, he can be a nice stashee for 2010 and beyond.

Mike Wallace-The guy is a big play machine. He doesnt get many touches, but when he does, he makes them count. He dropped a sure TD early then came back for a second long TD from Big Ben. If you count long TD's as bonus points, this guy is a steal. Think Nate Washington circa 2008.

Michael Bush-The guy is a bruiser and following a respectable effort against the Giants which saw him score and with McFadden out, he will get the carries as Fargas struggled to move the pile.

Anthony Gonzalez-Remember that the preseason sleeper should be returning from injury next week. Yes Garcon and Collie have been solid, but remember he has a full year in the system, developed great chemistry with Manning last year and has sure hands. Keep an eye on him and buy low.

Mike Sims Walker-Do not worry about the 0 he put up last week. He was suspended for missing curfew. Big deal. Grab him now while his owner thinks he was hurt. Pounce.

Miles Austin-This is a no brainer. 10 catches, 2 long scores, 200+ yards. If he is somehow available or on waivers, use your high waiver number on him.

Kyle Orton-I still dont think the Broncos are that good or one of the 4 best teams in the AFC, but Orton is playing very well and as a bye week fill in for a QB you start every week, you could do a lot worse. He moved the Broncos up and down the field and should continue to play mistake free football.

Donnie Avery-Back in the groove with Bulger back under center, went over 80 yards and a score and if he was dropped by an inpatient owner, now is a good time to grab him and stash on the bench for bye weeks.

Austin Collie-Yes 3 TD's in the last 2 games. What will return of Anthony Gonzalez do?
Anthony Fasano-Yes he scored on MNF, but did not much else.

Sunday Schooled-What We Learned From Week 5

-Tom Brady, despite missing two easy throws to Moss in the first half had 2 scores before the break. After halftime, the Pats gameplan became way too conservative, he lost a fumble and missed Welker on a slant that would have won the game. The Pats have to go back and realize they missed an opportunity in Denver.

-Miles Austin's breakout, which was predicted here, came. He broke two huge gains out of short gains for 2 scores, saving the Cowboys. Tony Romo owes him a steak dinner.

-After a slow start Roddy White busted out for over 200 yards and 2 scores. One was a busted coverage 90 yard score, so expect inconsistency from the Falcons #1 WR with Tony Gonzalez still in the lineup.

-Joseph Addai, despite battling an injury, got more touches then Rookie Donald Brown and used the most of it as he scored again for the Colts. How will the return of Anthony Gonzalez impact Austin Collie's value? The BYU rookie scored twice more on Sunday.

-Bills, Titans, Rams, Raiders go get yourselves new QB's asap. How do the Bills LOSE a game when the Browns QB completes 2 passes...yes....2!

-Any fantasy owner that played Jake Delhomme owner in the place of a bye week QB (me), was livid that on 1st and goal the Panthers attempted 0 pass attempts...and didnt score.

-Glen Coffee will be fine after leaving Sunday's blowout loss to the Falcons

-Eddie Royal finally woke up with over 10 grabs, so hopefully you bought low on the Broncos WR#2, while Brandon Marshall is turning into the beast we all knew he was.

-Welcome Back Matt, as Hasselbeck throws 4 TD's in the rout of Jacksonville. Houshmandzadeh scores twice and so does Burleson...what about Carlson?

A Tale of Two WR's

Fantasy Analysis-Jets acquired Braylon Edwards for Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnick, and 2 picks

Analysis: Mark Sanchez stock goes up as he gets a solid second WR to throw to. Braylon Edwards' stock also goes up because of his motivation to succeed in the big city and to play for a winner. Cotchery's value is one to watch now for the Jets. On one hand, the addition of a proven playmaker can only limit the number of targets he receives, however, with less double teams and safety help that will have to be focused on him, that will now be on Edwards, it is entirely possible Cotchery has more room to roam. Buy low on Sanchez and Edwards and keep a close eye on Cotchery. It may not happen this week as Edwards becomes accustomed to the offense, but watch out for the impact.

In Cleveland, Mohamed Massaquoi is the clear #1 receiver. We were more excited about his value when he had someone like Edwards lining up across the field, so now he will attract the opposing teams top corner as Mike Furrey or Chansi Stuckey lines up beside him. Because the Browns will struggle to stay in front of teams and will be playing from behind, his value will remain as a solid WR3. Stuckey and Furrey will battle for snaps in Cleveland, but neither holds much value.

Michael Crabtree signs with the 49ers
Keeper league owners are relieved that their gamble to draft Crabtree will pay dividends in 2009 and not have to wait for 2010. While he will struggle to establish a solid impact right away, given a few weeks and a SF bye week, Crabtree's expectations must be tempered as he plays in a run oriented offense. The value of Josh Morgan, Arnaz Battle and Isaac Bruce will all take a hit in the meantime, however Vernon Davis, who has become the 49ers main receiving weapon, should continue to see plenty of targets and now more of an open middle of the field as the safety will have to cheat over to play Crabtree. He probably will not be active for Week 5, but play him once he is.

NFL Beat The Book-Week 3

Pittsburgh -4.5 @ Cincy
A lot of people are on Cincy this week after the Steelers struggled in a lose to Chicago and the Bengals upset GB. Not so fast. Cincy did not play well against Denver and Pittsburgh will be just fine. They will shut down Cedric Benson and do enough against a weak secondary to cover.

Ravens -13.5 vs. Browns
This game exactly like the Kc-BAL game from week one which saw Baltimore cover by...14. Cleveland cannot move the ball offensively and an improved Ravens offense should score 30+. Easy cover for Baltimore.

Broncos +1.5 @ Oakland
The Broncos have been one of the best defenses early on and after struggling mightily against a weak KC defense, JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders offense cannot be trusted. Expect the Broncos to run the ball at will and Orton will do just enough to pull out an out right win.

SF +7.5@ Minnesota
A battle of 2-0 teams, I love what the 49ers are doing on the ground and while controlling the clock, they will be keeping the rock out of the hands of Peterson. The Vikes havent been forced to have Favre win them a game yet, however this may be the week. The 49ers defense has slowed the Cardinals and Seahawks ground game, so Favre may be forced to make tough throws. If that is the case, the 49ers will have the game right where they want it.

GB -6.5 @ Rams
You have to expect the Packers to come out pissed after blowing a game at home to Cincy last week. Greg Jennings had 0 catches last week. That wont happen again. Expect a massive performance through the air and for the Rams to be down 14 points midway through the first quarter. Packers in a rout.

What to do with Marion Barber in Week 3?
-Barber said today that he is determined to play in Week 3 against the Panthers. Despite the confidence, Barber is not a safe bet for production and given his Monday Night game, unless you have Felix Jones or Tashard Choice to go to in case he is inactive, it may be best to bench him. If you are a Choice or Jones owner and want to use them in a flex role, this is a similar issue. Unless Barber is declared out or limited by Sunday at 1pm, play a safer option.

Should Cadillac Williams missing practice Thursday be concerning?
-Absolutely not. The Bucs back has looked great through two games and was simply getting a day off after playing his first game on turf in week two. Caddy does have an interesting matchup in Week 3 against the Giants, who were destroyed on the ground by the Cowboys.

Even if healthy should Hasselbeck gets the call and if not, who can we get to fill in?
No. Hasselbeck looked rusty in the first half against the 49ers and that was before his injury. He is not a safe bet to play let alone finish a game this week. Other QB's to consider who may be available are Flacco, Leftwich, Cassel and Kolb.

Wes Welker returned to Pats practice Thursday...big deal?
For Tom Brady owners yes, because as good as Julian Edelman looked, you could tell that he missed the chemsitry he had developed with Welker. For Welker owners, be patient and do not expect a miracle. There is still a chance he sits out Sunday, but just in case, be ready to insert him in if he is declared active.

Bench Jamal Lewis this week?
Yes. Lewis has missed the last two days of practice and is not the type of back to perform well when not at 100%. This may be the opening rookie James Davis needs to excel, but let him prove that first. This may be the changing of the guard, or back in this case, in Cleveland.

What crazy name may have a crazy game in Week 3?
Michael Clayton, the WR of the Bucs may just have a huge Sunday against the Giants. Here is why. The Giants should get a decent lead on the struggling Bucs, thus forcing the Tampa offense to air it out. With Antonio Bryant and Maurice Stovall unlikely to play, Clayton becomes Leftwich's #1 option, and considering he has done a solid job getting his wideouts in the end zone so far, Clayton may be a solid, sleeper flex play.

As the Bell Tolls for the Saints Backfield?

One of the most interesting storylines for fantasy owners so far during the 2009 season involves the Saints backfield. Coming into the season everyone was dying to get Pierre Thomas after his amazing end to last season. He was being drafted high, ahead of even teammate Reggie Bush, and owners were salivating over what could be over a full season.

Thomas then came down with an injury during camp and everyone poo-pooed it as a minor setback and he would good for the opener. Not so fast. After missing two games, Thomas seems to be ready to resume the starting gig in New Orleans. Or is he?

Yah see, through the first two weeks, former Bronco Mike Bell has become a solid fantasy option following a solid opener which saw him go over 100 yards against Detroit, then scoring in week two's blowout over Philly. But now Bell may miss time due to a similar injury that Thomas has had, so naturally Thomas is the man right? Wrong.

Thats because Wednesday word started spreading that Lynell Hamilton (yeh never heard of him before) saw first-team reps at Saints practice Wednesday along with both Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, though Hamilton claims to have received the most. Hamilton even told the press that, "The coaches went ahead and told me to be ready for the game," according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

So what to make of this mess? Reggie Bush, who came into the season as the guy with a cloudy outlook seems to be the safest bet for fantasy considering his health, receiving skills and big play ability. Furthermore, given Drew Brees' desire to air it out, RB's in this system, unless they receive the goal line work or can make plays in the receiving game, must be downgraded.

In any event, Hamilton is a must add now, as injury reports will trickle in up to game time and any Saints offensive skill player has a decent chance to find the end zone. Heck, Heath Evans has 2 more TD's in 2009 then Randy Moss.

NFL Waiver Wire Week 3

QB
Byron Leftwich-At the rate the Bucs defense is giving up points, it seems like Leftwich will be airing i tout to play catch up in every game. He has a solid stable of talent, especially if Antonio Bryant ever returns, so add him as a solid QB2 or bye week fill in.

Trent Edwards-Edwards has been rock solid so far for the Bills, throwing 2 more TD passes Sunday. He also has solid weapons, especially when Fred Jackson plays in the backfield. With all of that talent, Edwards is also a solid bye week fill in and borderline starter against the right defense.

Kevin Kolb-There is still no word on whether Donovan McNabb will be back for this weeks game, but Kolb almost threw for 400 yards and added 2 scores against the Saints. The Eagles have always been a run heavy offense, so expect Kolb to post solid numbers going forward. Vick will be back this week, but will not have as much impact as Kolb will as the starter.

Tashard Choice-If Marion Barber cannot go Monday Night Choice may be the Cowboys backup to Felix Jones. Given that Jones is not an every down back, Choice may see some extra carries and be in line for a solid flex spot. If Barber's injury is more serious then originally thought, Choice can be a gem.

Rashard Mendenhall-After watching the first two Steelers games it is clear Willie Parker has lost a step and it seems like it has left him forever. Mendenhall is a 1st round talent with game changing speed and it is about time for the Steelers to hand him the reigns.

LeSean McCoy-Brian Westbrook is shockingly back to game to game status for the Eagles. At any time this can become a serious problem and McCoy is next in line. All owners of B-West should own McCoy but if not, he is a solid prospect down the line.

Mike Sims-Walker-With Troy Williamson out for the year, Walker will re-emerge as the Jags starter on the other side of Torry Holt. He scored and caught 6 balls in week two, so watch out for him to do more of the same if the Jags are constantly playing from behind.

Mario Manningham and Steve Smith-It goes without saying that this Giants duo needs to be owned in every format. No one catches 10 balls in a week like these two do and doesnt end up on a roster, so if you have time, place a waiver claim in for one of these two targets, as it is clear Eli Manning loves to toss the ball in their direction.

Chansi Stuckey-His performances may not be consistant throughout the entire year, but Stuckey is a playmaker who has made some big plays for the Jets so far this season. If he can develop more of an ability in route running, his ability to get open and burst through the secondary makes him a solid WR3 during bye weeks.

Matt Ryan-Falcons: Ryan looked great in the season opening win against the Dolphins as he led the team down the field spreading the ball to all of his targets. With Michael Turner always a threat to run the ball, Ryan has open room in the secondary. After McNabb picked apart the Panthers, Ryan should be able to do the same.
Brett Favre-Vikings: This may be a rare time I feel comfortable recommending Favre, yet after allowing 6 TD's to the Saints last week through the air, the Vikes QB should be able to hit pay dirt at least twice no?

Jason Campbell-Redskins: The Rams looked terrible in Week 1 and allowed Matt Hasselbeck to score 3 times through the air. With the weapons he has, there is no reason to think Campbell cannot take advantage of the same weak secondary.

RB
Ray Rice-Ravens: Rice proved a reliable back out of the backfield and against a Chargers D that allowed McFadden and Bush to run wild in the MNF game, Rice may be in line for a heavy dose of action. PPR leaguers should already have him set to go.

Brandon Jacobs-Giants: Considering the Bucs moved the ball up and down the field on the ground should be enough evidence that the G-Men should run the ball 35-40 times against the Cowboys Sunday. Jacobs is the lead horse and despite having no hands, is a solid option to score twice this week.

Roddy White-Falcons: Do not be worried that he only caught a few balls in Week 1. Expect Matt Ryan to continue to find the open man and White should go for over 100 and a score against a suspect Panthers defense.

Percy Harvin-Vikings: I lost two league games last week for benching Harvin. Now he gets the Lions. he also gets a ton of return yardage and can break one at any time. A true playmaker, he must be active this week on your team.

Mark Sanchez-Jets: He looked great in the opener and so did Trent Edwards against the Pats. But you know the coaching staff is going to throw some wrinkles at the rookie that he has never seen before. Wait a week to let him get his feet wet in his first pressure game.

Matt Cassel-Chiefs: Even if he plays against the Raiders, he will not be 100% and considering the lack of weapons at his disposal, a healthier quarterback should be in your lineup. The Raiders did a pretty good job against a good Chargers passing game, so find a safer option in this week.

RB
LaDainian Tomlinson-Chargers: Same as Cassel, even if he plays, it will not be at 100% and going against the tough Ravens defense, you need to be 100%

Willie Parker-Steelers: Word out of Steelers territory Friday says Parker will be entering a timeshare with Mendenhall. The Bears are angry coming off their loss last Sunday and Ryan Grant did not do much against their defense. Parker may have lost a step, so watch out for a steady decline.

WR
Kevin Walter-Texans: I love the Houston receiver, but coming off an injury, against a top defense, with a struggling offense gives me enough to worry about how much he can impact the game. If you do not have a better option feel free, just no guarantee when someone is coming off a groin injury.

Lance Moore-Saints: Another receiver I love, Moore did not make any impact in the Saints blowout win against Detroit. You would think of the 6 TD passes thrown by Brees 1 would go to Moore. Nope. Until he gets consistant catches find a safer option to get catches and scores.

Fantasy Hockey Tips for the 2009 Season-By Scott Drake

As the 2009-2010 NHL season approaches we are getting prepared for our upcoming fantasy drafts. We are watching training camps to see which draft picks are ready jump to the NHL immediately. Maybe you are even scouting to see if you can find that sleeper pick that really nobody knows about. If your league mates are as knowledgeable as you are, and odds are, they are. Then there won't be that many surprises or sleepers out there during your draft. Just a few explicit words for you when you steal their picks late in the draft. Don't get me wrong picking those sleepers definitely help in those late rounds. But that is not where a draft is won or lost. Here are some draft tips I'd like to share with you to help you have a success during your draft.

Top 5 Draft Tips:

1. If you are selecting 1 or 2. No brainer take Ovechkin, Crosby or Malkin. Any one of those 3 are no brainers and sure fire picks.

2. If you are not 1 or 2. Take a top ranked goalie. Typically what happens are that goalies go in runs. And they are also tiered by skill level. If you are selecting in the middle it really makes sense to lock up a top tier goalie. You might say well why wouldn't I take a forward or defensemen first? Because drafting a top tiered goaltender will guarantee you 70 games played by your goaltender. That's 20 more games then the next tier of goaltenders. Not to mention a solid chance at 20 more wins then the next set of net minders. Just look at last years top 5 goalies versus every other goalie. There are only so many good ones out there. So make sure you grab one of the top 5 as I can assure you once the run starts you will be smiling knowing that on your way back around to draft you will already have secured that top netminder and can now focus on your next top player.

3. Wings vs Centers. I would concentrate on the wings before I looked for a center first. Reason being, there are a lot of top centers. The top wingers are few and far between. So make sure you grab yourself one.

4. Defensemen. Every year when I do well in my league I always draft a top defensemen every other round for the first couple of rounds. Similar to goalies there are a top tier group and then it significantly drops off after that. So lock one up.

5. Pick with your head not your heart. While I might love my favorite NHL team. Picking a guy because he plays for my favorite team, versus picking a player who is the best player available at that time just doesn't make sense. It is always nice to root for your player while watching your favorite team. But bottom line, its about winning that trophy or payout at seasons end. So pick wisely!

Beatin the Books-CFB Week 3

Thanks to Notre Dame's choke job and USC not being able to win by a larger margin, last week was a down week in CFB (thankfully we made upf or it in the NFL). Now onto this weeks action..

Kansas -23 vs. Duke
Duke has played pretty well so far in 2009, but they will have no answers for Todd Reesing through the air and Jake Sharp on the ground. Kansas will score 45+ and wont allow more then 20.

Toledo +20 vs. Ohio State
The Buckeyes have been very unimpressive so far in 2009, squeeking by Navy and losing at home to USC. Toledo on the other hand has an experienced QB, talented WR group and should keep it within 17 or so. 20 seems a bit to high. Maybe buy a point and get it to 21.

Notre Dame -10 vs Michigan State
Notre Dame will come out pissed on Saturday and look to show that it is better then they showed lastw eek in their loss to Michigan. MSU wont be able to stop the Irish offense and after a loss at home to Central Michigan, it is evident MSU will struggle on the road.

Florida -30 vs. Tennessee
30 is a ton of points. I know. But everyone knows Florida wants to run it up Saturday against Lane Kiffin, so a 48-14 win still covers it.

BYU -8 vs. Florida State
BYU first beat Oklahoma then went in and crushed Tulane. FSU came off a heart breaking loss to Miami by struggling against Jacksonville State. The Cougars are still playing for a potential BCS spoiler spot and have too many weapons for the Seminoles to stop. Take into affect the altitude and BYU wins this by 10+

Waiver Wired-Week Two

Here are some players to take a look at after the first week of the NFL season is in the books.

QB
Joe Flacco, Ravens-Do not expect 3 TD every time out, however under Harbaugh the Ravens are much less of a smash mouth, ball control, running team. He has good weapons in Mason, Heap and Clayton, so if the matchup is right, feel comfortable playing him.

Byron Leftwich, Bucs-Leftwich almost threw for 300 yards Sunday but you have to understand he did so as the Bucs were trying to comeback against the Cowboys. The good news is that as the Bucs defense adjusts to a new system, they may be behind often. Leftwich is not mobile at all, but as a backup, you could do worse.

Jeff Garcia, Eagles-Kevin Kolb is not the longterm backup answer in Philly, so for those McNabb owners, despite Kolb playing this week, Garcia is probably the best bet in case Donovan misses more time. He led the Eagles to the playoffs during his one season there and with all the weapons would be instantly starter worthy.

RB
Michael Bush, Raiders-Darren McFadden is the clear starter in Oakland, but it seems Bush will have enough of an opportunity to make an impact. He was involved on the goal line in their opener and scored a TD. Especially for McFadden owners, Bush is a solid add.

Cadillac Williams, Bucs-If for some reason caddy is still available, rush to your wire and get him. He started and looked great for the Bucs and with Earnest Graham being unselfish and not asking to go into the game, deferring to the hot hand, Williams' stock is rising. With 90 yards and a score vs. Dallas, he looked like the back of old.

Fred Jackson, Bills-There is no way this guy is available in your league, but do what you can to grab him. Even when Lynch returns, Jackson is a solid back to stash in case of injury. He showed quickness, toyghness and good pass catching skills in the near upset of the Pats, so expect more of the same for the few more games he is the starter.

Kevin Faulk, Patriots-While Fred Taylor scored a TD and Laurence Maroney rushed for some good yardage, Faulk is the most valuable Pats back because he plays the most snaps, is great in PPR formats and even on the 2-pt conversion attempts that failed, he was on the field. With the Pats looking as pass happy as ever, Faulk is surely a 4 catch guy weekly with the chance to score every time out.

WR
Devery Henderson, Saints
Every Saints skill position player on offense should be owned cause each has a chance to score. Even Heath Evans scored in Week 1. Grab Henderson if you can.

Louis Murphy, Raiders
It will be interesting to see whether Murphy or Heyward-Bay goes to the sidelines when starter Chaz Schillens is back for the Raiders, but for now, with that date unknown, Murphy is a solid bet to lead the team in catches. Heyward-Bay looked awful, while Murphy not only scored once, he had one overturned on a bad call. He is not a weekly starter, but a solid bench contributor.

Steve Smith, Giants
Smith provided a spark for the Giants in their opener against the Skins, however the injury to Hakeem Nicks opens the door for more of Smith making plays. He may not score often, but the targets and receptions will be there as Eli Manning looks for reliable targets.

TE
Ben Watson, Patriots-The chances of Watson having another 2 TD game this year are slim, but this at least shows that there are signs of life. Watson made two clutch catches and this should keep him out of the coaches doghouse...for a week at least.

Todd Heap, Ravens-Another TE that seems to have refound the wonder years, Heap grabbed 5 balls in the opener and scored as well. If he is a FA snag him and watch. If he can return to his old level of play, its a waiver wire steal.

Defenses to consider this week
Atlanta vs. Carolina-The Panthers looked terrible in Week 1 while Atlanta shut down Miami.
Washington vs. St. Louis-The Skins only allowed 1 offensive TD in the opener and the Rams were shut out.

Jerod Mayo Injury Update

The Boston Globe has said that Jerod Mayo is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a Grade 3 or the worst possible sprain. The other source believes it is not that bad.
Fantasy Analysis: Mayo was the defensive rookie of the year and a playmaker on the Pats defense. This is a huge blow to the defense as Gary Guyton will step in. This hurts the Pats defense, so see how they respond against arch rival New York this week before dropping them as a unit.

The Day After-Tuesday NFL News & Notes

-ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed that Tony Romo (ankle) will practice Wednesday and start against the Giants on Sunday night.

-Browns used rotation at #2 WR position in week 1. Outside of Braylon Edwards, no Cleveland WR should be owned.

-Eagles place Shawn Andrews on IR. Huge blow for the Eagles running attack and with Donovan McNabb possibly out, teams can stack the box and shut down the run and force the QB to make plays.

-Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions received no looks during his first NFL game as the Lions attempted to come back after be doing early against the Saints.

-With the injury to Anthony Gonzalez, expect Dallas Clark to become even more involved in the Colts passing game.

-Saints HC Sean Payton hints at running back by commitee when Pierre Thomas is ready to go as he was impressed with the ability of Mike Bell who ran for well over 100 yards in the opener.

-Chris Chambers caught 0 balls Monday Night. Is he done? Malcolm Floyd may be starting very shortly.

-Kevin Faulk led all Patriots running backs in plays on the field Monday with 42. PPR players should be placing a waiver claim for the Pats all-everything back.

How to Lose 2 Fantasy Games By a Total of 4.5 Points

Waking up this morning and checking the computer is to many like Christmas morning, opening gifts. Since most of the country did not stay awake till 1:30am to see the end of the Chargers-Raiders game, fantasy owners everywhere logged on to check how their team fared and whether they pulled out a victory. I was one of them.

Before my head hit the pillow at halftime of the 2nd MNF game, I knew 1 team was in deep trouble thanks largely to Zach Miller, who looked more like Tony Gonzalez then himself. The other team just got a miraculous 2 TD 4th quarter from Brady and a 47 yard FG by Kaeding and was in decent shape. But that was not to be.

Sure enough Miller ended his night with 6 catches for 90+ yards, resulting in a 15 pt performance giving me a 4 pt loss. Then there is the other game, which ended with me losing by .5 points. Yes, .5 points. Meaning if Darren McFadden didnt fumble, drop a pass or even get a goal line touch in the 1st half, I win. Or on 3rd and 17, Gates doesnt catch a 23 yard strike from Rivers, Kaeding gets a FG opp and I win.

But thats not what I blame it on and this is the true lesson of this post. Always go with your gut. On Sunday morning at 11am I had an epiphany. Chris Henry has been so good this preseason, he has to play. And then another. Felix Jones is gonna get a short yardage TD this week, no doubt. No chance.

So after glowing over Percy Harvin for a month, I sat the rookie and watched him score a TD for Minnesota. Henry had 1 catch, Jones had 2 points, and that is how you lose games.

Always go with your heart. Play certain matchups, but when the coin is tossed, always go with your 1st choice.

MNF Early Game Notes

-Tom Brady kept dinking and dunking for 55 minutes. Then threw 2 Bradyesque strikes to Ben Watson to lead the Pats to victory. It took the Pats abandoning the run to get into rhythm, so it will be interesting to see how successful they will be next week against the Rex Ryan led Jets pass defense. Should be a great game in the Meadowlands.

-Countdown to T.O. complaing begins in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...TO was invisible Monday Night, with 2 catches for 45 yards. No end zone touches, no down field strikes, he was nowhere to be seen. And after this debacle, watch out for a brewing situation in Buffalo already.

-I was impressed by Trent Edwards, who ran the screen game to perfection, got the ball out quickly and made the necessary plays to win. Not his fault the defense gave up 14 points in the last 3 minutes.

-Fred Jackson needs to be owned in all leagues and the Bills must get him the ball as much as they can. 57 yards rushing, 83 yards receiving and a score. Not bad for a backup filling in for Lynch. He was the most valuable player all night.

-Love the Pats throwbacks jerseys, the Bills...not so much.

And so it begins…. Question: What’s the spread?

Answer: Cheese and crackers and crudités.

As he began to roar with laughter, I realized he was talking about the spread in the USC vs. Ohio State game with someone on the phone and not about the food I was putting out when our guests arrived. And so it begins… all football, all the time. The NFL season kicks off in earnest on Sunday, September 13, 2009 and football fans everywhere will be spending their days glued in front of the televisions. What makes these games more intriguing for my husband is the fact that he bets on almost every college and professional game (just an exaggeration). (All money by the way that I could think of much better things to do with. Things that people would be able to see.) He screams at the TV so loudly that our poor puppy runs under the table because she thinks she did something wrong. As if him screaming for the player to run faster is actually going to motivate him to run. All bets are off (or shall I say on) during football season. All I can say is that while he’s screaming at the television, he doesn’t know what I’m “betting” on.

NFL Fantasy Notes-Saturday Night

-Browns RB James Davis was involved in a one-car accident while driving to the Browns' practice facility Saturday morning and is questionable for Sunday's game. Although the injury does not sound serious, any thought that he would have a big season opener are dashed now, as the Browns will ride Jamal Lewis in Week 1

-Eagles WR Reggie Brown traveled with the team to Carolina, squashing rumors he would be cut before the season opener

-Bengals Kicker Shayne Graham is ready for the season opener and has a great opener against the Broncos. If you like playing kicker matchups, this is one to use

Blockbuster NHL Deal Complete

The San Jose Sharks have acquired Dany Heatley for Jonathan Cheechoo, Milan Michalek, and a second round pick.

Fantasy Analysis: Heatley will now go to camp motivated to show that he is not a spoiled athlete and should have an immense season playing along Joe Thornton. Cheechoo on the other hand has struggled since early in the 2007 season and maybe a change of scenery will help. Michalek is also a solid option, however is not in the same league as the other two stars.

UConn struggled to a 7 point win on the road at Ohio last week while UNC crushed The Citadel. UNC also blew out UConn in 2008 thanks to 3 blocked kicks in the 2nd quarter. Nebraska -21 vs. Arkansas State
These are not your fathers Cornhuskers. This team slings the ball over the field, then hands it to Roy Helu Jr. who goes nuts. They crushed Florida Atlantic, which actually has some solid weapons, by 46 points. Arkansas State on the other hand won by 61! But, that was against Mississipii Valley State. The Huskers will post 40+ and not allow more then 17. That sure covers 21! Nebraska 45 ASU 18

TCU -11 @ Virginia
Another road dog here as the Horned Frogs make their 2009 debut. They still have a solid defense that can stifle anyone, with an offense that can make big plays and control the ball. The Cavs are coming off a home loss to....WILLIAM & MARY...Nuff said. TCU 25 UVA 10

USC -7 @ OSU
Yes, a 3rd road dog. These two teams met last year and the talent disparity was immense. take my word, I was there. Yes USC lost Mark Sanchez to the NFL but they have a ton of future pro RB's and a solid freshman who will avoid mistakes. A lot can be told in a win, thus OSU's shaky performance in their win Navy showed a lot of weaknesses. A team like USC will capitalize. Make it 2 straight for USC, which always shows up and crushes Big 10 schools. USC 30 Ohio State 20

Notre Dame -3 @ Michigan
Yes it is getting ridiculous with the road dogs, but I was more impressed with Notre Dame's win against an offensive juggernaut like Nevada then Michigan's win vs WMU. They have the better QB, better group of receivers, and the better defense. I dont even think this is close. Notre Dame 30 Michigan 13

Friday Night NFL News & Notes

-ESPN's John Clayton said that Anquan Boldin (hamstring) "probably" won't play in Week 1. That is a big blow for the Cardinals and fantasy owners. With Steve Breaston also hobbling and not 100%, Jerheme Urban may have a solid opener.
-Maurice Jones-Drew participated fully in Jaguars practice Friday and was removed from the Week 1 injury report.
-Pierre Thomas (knee) has formally been ruled out for Week 1.
-Kevin Walter did not practice again Friday and remains a game time decision on Sunday.
-Vikings coach Brad Childress all but confirmed that Bernard Berrian (questionable, hamstring) will be a game-time decision in Week 1.
-Knowshon Moreno (knee, questionable) was limited in Broncos practice Friday.
-The injury suffered by Bo Scaife in the Thursday night opener is not considered serious.
-Matt Cassel (knee, questionable) was a limited participant in Chiefs practice Friday. He seems unlikely to be fully healthy and a safe play this weekend against Baltimore.
-Deion Branch misses his 3rd straight day of practice and seems doubtful for the Seahawks opener.
-Shawne Merriman will not be charged for any crime. Move the Chargers defense up your ranks for the year.
